With the Premier League season wrapped up, fresh stats from AceOdds.com have revealed a painful truth for Brighton fans – they would have secured Champions League football if it weren’t for costly errors – while Arsenal and Nottingham Forest benefitted most from opposition mistakes.
The boffins went through each match from the 2024/25 campaign, tallying up every howler that directly led to a goal – rejigging the table by erasing those costly cock-ups – to unveil that the Seagulls would’ve landed five more points, elevating them up to 5th place.
All in all, 186 clangers led directly to goals this season – enough to swing the outcome in 65 matches – with Southampton and Manchester United costing themselves the most points with unnecessary errors.
In the revised error-free table, the Saints would’ve clawed back 11 extra points – not enough for a miracle, but enough to haul them off the bottom and into the dizzy heights on 19th. Meanwhile, United could’ve nabbed another eight points, mostly thanks to André Onana’s three individual errors, bumping them up two places to a thoroughly underwhelming 13th.
On the flip side of the coin, Nottingham Forest who earned a return to a European competition for the first time in 30 years, have their sloppy opposition to thank. Take away the opponents’ mistakes, Forest would’ve lost a whopping 13 points – more than any other club – sending them crashing four spots down to 11th.
Hot on their heels were the Gunners, who owe a fair bit to the slip-ups of others. Strip away the freebies and they’d have dropped eight points, sliding down two places to 4th and kissing goodbye their streak of runner-up medals.
Individually, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen finds himself top of the Whoopsie League, dishing out five goals on a plate all by himself. Just behind him, with four each, were Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Robert Sánchez, and Arijanet Muric – all doing their best impressions of undercover strikers for the opposition.
