Music can be so powerful that whenever you hear them play you find yourself pretending something has lodged itself in your eye. Everyone has that one song that reminds them of a past lover or a loss of a loved one. Here is a list of 7 songs that break your heart every time:
1. Liar by Mumford And Sons: Once his voice is first heard you can feel that ache rising in your heart and that lump in your throat. Mumford and Sons has wildly popular but ‘Liar’ is one of their lesser known songs, perhaps it’s just too sad for air play. The frustrations in loving someone that lies to you is spoken in the last few lines of the song
And you lean in for your last kiss,
Who in this world can ask me to resist?
Your hands cold as they find my neck,
Oh this love I have found, I detest
2. Home by Michael Buble: Sometimes you just want to go home and this Frank Sinatra like crooner sings it best in this song. For crying out loud, someone just let him go home. Longing for that comfort that you can only find in your home or a certain someone is heart breaking.
3. To Build A Home by Cinematic Orchestra: There is always something about a piano playing in the beginning of the song and then coupled with a flawless male voice that really gets you. The way the piano speeds up in places and his voice rises softly it almost gives you a sense of hope until you hear what the lyrics are:
I held on as tightly as you held onto me
I held on as tightly as you held onto me
‘Cause, I built a home
For you
For me
Until it disappeared
From me
From you
And now, it’s time to leave and turn to dust
4. Hurt by Johnny Cash: Nine Inch Nails originally created the song ‘Hurt’ but it was Johnny Cash that created a gut wrenching and somber song that still haunts to this day. Perhaps it’s the story behind Johnny Cash and his struggles or how he came about to revisiting this song but whatever it is, you feel his ‘hurt’.
5. Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy: This song is for those who loved and lost. First released in 2008 this song didn’t get much airplay or even notary, but through the years it has been passed on to the broken hearted for some sort of relief or self-harm, depending on how you relate to this songstress sadness
I cannot wake up in the morning
Without you on my mind
So you’re gone and I’m haunted
And I bet you are just fine
Did I make it that easy
To walk right in and out of my life?
Goodbye, my almost lover
6. Fix You by Coldplay: Coldplay has many different hits and there are plenty of their songs that strike different people but Fix You is probably that one song of theirs that really relates to everyone. There is one point in your life when you have to take care of someone when they cannot do it alone or vice versa. Unlike other songs on this list, this one ends more positively leaving you with a small hope.
7. Lies by Marina and the Diamonds: A newer songstress to the music and heart ache scene is Marina and her band the Diamonds. The acoustic version of this song is just as spine tingling as the original version, suggestion: listen to both and you make the decision. There is a certain sort of whine to her voice in the song but a strong beat to keep yourself from sobbing.
