Following the Royal Wedding last year and the imminent Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in June, the people of Britain are really starting to get into the swing of street parties, and even if you weren’t one of the 1 million people that attended last year, you can easily make 5th June 2012 a day to remember.
Even the Prime Minister is encouraging this community spirit by legislating that all private road closures and street party licenses will be free for this occasion, you just have to fill in the forms, block off the street and the world is your oyster.
But with so many parties expected this year, how are you going to make sure your street stands out from the crowd?
When you look online, you see such a wide variety of Jubilee merchandise that all you need to do is collect a couple of pounds from each person in the street and you can have everything you need to make your party go with a swing.
Decorate your street with the bunting and flags that are widely available to buy or many communities now have groups of individuals offering to make bunting for free, as long it is being used for a Diamond Jubilee party and you can provide the raw materials.
Why not ask everyone to make their own royal crown for the party with a prize for the best entry? Or, as we are celebrating the fact that our Queen has ruled for 65 years, you could give every house in the street a year from her reign and ask them to dress in the fashion of the era.
Though we wouldn’t suggest going as far as some in painting your house red, white or blue, what about creating a Jubilee picnic for the event where every food has to be one of the royal colours and see who comes up with the most creative idea – but take it from one that knows, red, white and blue burgers with a red bun, white cheese and blue burger is not always the hit that you would think it would be.
The majority of community parishes are going to be issuing a commemorative coin to primary school children in honour of this amazing event, but you can also choose a memento for your street so that you have a permanent record of this epic day. This is an event that is only going to happen once in a lifetime so make sure you don’t miss out and get your street ready for the party of the year.
