Britain’s Next National Day: We want bottomless brunch and to work by the pool

There’s a national day for many things these days, but some of life’s greatest pleasures, like having a boozy lunch with friends or enjoying a cosy night in in your PJs just haven’t been celebrated enough – until now!

Missy Empire asked 1000 women between the ages of 18 and 34 to suggest ideas for a new national awareness day – and their responses have turned up everything from celebrating our favourite food and drink, to honouring the thrills of the Love Island villa!

One of the most popular suggestions was to launch a National Bottomless Brunch Day – and it’s hard to argue against it. Let’s face it, what’s not to love about clinking a glass of chilled prosecco with friends whilst devouring a plate full of pancakes and maple syrup? Or perhaps a full English breakfast could be on the menu instead: celebrating a National All You Can Eat Fry Up Day was another suggestion.

In fact, enjoying food and drink with friends proved immensely popular amongst the women surveyed:

  • Those questioned would love a National Diet Coke Day, which, surprisingly, doesn’t exist yet!
  • And cheeky Nando’s! The respondents LOVE it so much that they think the peri-peri chicken chain deserves to be honoured with its own National Nando’s Day.
  • Other fast food also appears on the list, suggesting the calendar should feature a National McDonald’s Day and even a National Doner Kebab Day.

Fashion and fun were also high on the list, with women championing a National Silly Clothes Day and a National 80s Day – bring on the shoulder pads and Day-Glo leg warmers!

All that eating, drinking and partying can be pretty tiring, and the findings highlight that women want precious chill time to be enshrined in a national day too. The theme of sleep came up time and time again, with suggestions of a National Nap Day, a National Duvet Day and a National PJs Day (which – hurrah! – all already exist). And we all know what we want to watch whilst in our PJs…

  • The popularity of ITV2’s hit show Love Island seems to know no limits – the survey respondents love villa life so much that they think this year there should be a National Love Island Day. But with two series scheduled this eyar we might need to schedule two national days!

The research showed that women care about getting that work-life balance just right, and Missy Empire’s respondents had some great ideas of how to achieve this.

  • One of the most popular suggestions was to launch a National Work By The Pool Day.
  • Escaping the pressures of work could be alleviated by a National Get Out Of The City Day; another highly popular suggestion.
  • Also suggested was a National Work By The Beach Day (there’s a pattern emerging here).

If you can’t escape work in the summer, though, and the temperature is rising outside, you need National Too Hot To Work Day or a National Heatwave Day, suggested by those surveyed, to help you flee the heat of the office – and get back to that bottomless brunch.
