Eye-opening Stats & Facts About Sleep (infographic)

Have you ever wondered what percentage of our lives we spend sleeping? Assuming we get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep every night, that amounts to about one-third of the time we are alive.

Everybody sleeps, but not everybody has a good quality of sleep. Research shows that 56% of vigorous exercisers report having a good night’s sleep almost every night. This shows that the activities you engage in can also determine the quality of sleep. By contrast, 47% of people who don’t exercise claim to rarely have a good night’s sleep.

There are about 90 different types of sleep disorders registered in the United States, and the number of people suffering from them is steadily increasing. Among them, insomnia and narcolepsy are the most common ones.

About 10% of US adults have chronic insomnia, which makes it the most prevalent sleep disorder. Some of these problems may not be recurrent and could only occur during an individual’s stressful periods. It is estimated that about 68% of Americans have sleep problems at least once a week, with the major cause being longer working hours.

This has led to people adopting a number of coping mechanisms to combat sleeping issues. For example, 4% of Americans use prescription sleeping pills over one month. Others prefer using sleep-related tech to help them get good-quality sleep.

Such technologies led to the expansion of the sleep aid market as more companies try to proffer solutions and coping mechanisms for sleep disorders.

The infographic below gives a brief and enlightening view of sleep-related facts and stats. It also highlights the importance of sleep and why it shouldn’t be overlooked. Check it out.
