Women approaching and in menopause are suffering significantly with low confidence levels, new research finds.
The study of 2,000 UK women, conducted by Absolute Collagen, has revealed that 48% of women aged 45-54 lack confidence.
Poor mental health is also prevalent for women in their forties and fifties, as 43% say that feelings of depression and anxiety negatively impact them.
The research shows that a third (33%) of women in this age group, which is when perimenopause and menopause most commonly occur, admit to having a lack of self-worth.
These findings come as Absolute Collagen has spotted that searches for ‘stages of menopause’ have surged by 170% compared to this time last year, while searches for ‘depression and menopause’ are also up 24%.
The study was inspired by Absolute Collagen co-founder Maxine Laceby’s own experience with mental health and menopause.
Its findings, and Maxine’s journey, have also inspired a brand-new online series, The Strong in Your Skin, hosted by Emma Willis.
Speaking in the first episode, Maxine says:
“12 years ago, I was suicidal. I was overcome with a feeling I couldn’t cope with life – I think that was the menopause.
“I do think women go through a lot. If you look at our lives, there are so many stages and changes that happen from the age of 11.”
Reflecting on her experiences during menopause, Maxine explains:
“I wanted to be myself in my forties, but I didn’t quite know how. I see a lot of women lose their sense of self (during menopause).
“That middle phase is so important. Yes, it’s terrifying. But yes, it’s empowering. It’s more than just middle age, it’s a transition, a renaissance a woman goes through. And we need to recognise this and allow it.”
